1-DAY TRIP
Santarem area

  • Depart by boat at 07:30 to Meeting of the Waters
  • Head down Amazon River to Maica Lake
  • Explore floodplain by canoe (if between February and early August)
  • Fishing, hiking and birdwatching in mainland rainforest
  • Return to Santarem around 19:00

Species normally seen: Three-toed Sloth, Squirrel Monkey, Titi Monkey, Silvery Marmoset (endemic), Red-bellied Macaw, Festive Parrot, Short-tailed parrot, Hoatzin, Great Potoo, Iguana and loads of water birds.

Rainforest/Floodplain

Day 1

  • Travel by boat from Santarem to Meeting of the Waters
  • Explore floodplain rainforest by canoe and fast boat
  • Travel up the Tapajos River
  • Reach Jari River to Pink Dolphins and hundreds of Psittacids

Day 2

  • Hike in mainland rainforest at Tapajos National Forest

Day 3

  • Snorkel in "Green Lake"
  • Visit village of Alter do Chao
  • Return to Santarem

Day 1

  • Travel by boat from Santarem to Meeting of the Waters
  • Explore floodplain by canoe
  • Bird watching
  • Fishing for Piranhas
  • Travel up the Tapajos River

Day 2

  • Wake up at Jari River mouth to observe flocks of over 25,000 parakeets and parrots
  • Dolphin watching and bird watching
  • Head to Jamaraqua Village at Tapajos National Forest

Day 3

  • Hiking in mainland rainforest
  • Explore Igapo floodplain by canoe
  • Fishing activities with locals
  • Head down Tapajos River to village of Alter do Chao

Day 4

  • Full day at Alter do Chao for swimming, kayaking and snorkeling

Day 5

  • Morning hike up to the Cururu Hill
  • Relaxing time and head back to Santarem

Blue Macaw Trip - Salvador/Hyacinth Valley

Day 1

  • Arrive in Salvador - check into hotel

Day 2

  • Early departure by van to Serra Branca for observing groups of Lear's Macaws at nesting site

Day 3

  • Early departure from hotel to observe large flock of Lear's at Euclides da Cunha area. Return to SSA.

Day 4

  • City tour of Salvador
  • Fly to Barreiras
  • Drive to Hyacinth Valley

Day 5

  • Walk to blind to observe and photograph flocks of over 50 Hyacinth Macaws

Day 6

  • Drive to Hyacinth Cliffs to explore the Cerrado ecosystem

Day 7

  • Visit nesting site on red cliffs
  • Return to Hyacinth Valley

Day 8

  • Spend the day observing other species like Blue and Gold, Red and Green, Amazons, Illigers, Maned Wolves, etc.

Day 9

  • Early departure to Barreiras
  • Return to Salvador; check into hotel

Day 10

  • End of trip

Blue Macaws/Golden Conure Trip - Salvador/Hyacinth Valley

Day 1

  • Arrive in Salvador - check into hotel

Day 2

  • Drive to Canudos
  • Observe Lear's Macaw at nesting site
  • Check in

Day 3

  • Early departure to observe Lear's Macaws from hide

Day 4

  • Early departure as above
  • Drive back to Salvador

Day 5

  • Fly to Barreiras
  • Drive to Hyacyinth Cliffs

Day 6

  • Drive back to Barreiras
  • Fly to Salvador, check into hotel

Day 7

  • Early hike to hide to observe flocks of nearly 100 Hyacinth Macaws
  • Same after lunch
  • Maned Wolf spotting in evening

Day 8

  • Early departure to drive along the Brazilian dry lands to reach Hyacinth Cliffs

Day 9

  • Visit Hyacinth Cliffs and observe nests being used by Green-winged Macaws

Day 10

  • Early departure to Hyacinth Valley

Day 11

  • Fly to Salvador/Santerem
  • Head to Jari River by boat
  • Observe huge flocks of parakeets and parrots
  • Head to Golden Conure site

Day 12

  • Explore Cupari River

Day 13

  • Observe Golden Conure and other Psittacids

Day 14

  • Same, then head down Tapajos River

Day 15

  • Explore rainforest floodplain for Festive and Short-tailed Parrots, amongst others
  • Transfer out

17-DAY TRIP
Northeastern and Northern Brazil Trip

Day 1

  • Meet you at Salvador

Day 2

  • Early departure to observe Lear's Macaws.
  • We shall stay at camp, which is an old, clean house, only 40m from the hide and 1 hour drive from the nesting site.

Day 3

  • Early departure to hide to observe and take trophy photographs of Lear's Macaws. (They are extremely threatened, with only 200 left in the wild. They are endemic to this ecosystem, called Caatinga.)
  • There will be at least 30 birds (max. 60) to be observed during several hours in the morning and afternoon.

Day 4

  • Early departure to Lear's macaw nesting site, which is composed of beautiful, amazing 70- to 100-meter-tall cliffs. Here we are also likely to observe King Vultures.

Day 5

  • Early departure to Lencois
  • Check into hotel

Day 6

  • Morning hike along the mesas and waterfalls at Lencois area.
  • Depart to small village located only 45m from Hyacinth Cliffs.

Day 7

  • Visit hide to observe over 40 (max. 80) Hyacinth macaws. (Hide is only 15m away.)
  • Return to Hyacinth camp, only 15-minute walk from hide.
  • Repeat in afternoon.

Day 8

  • Early departure to Hyacinth Cliffs to observe flocks of over 20 Red and Green Macaws, Maned Wolves and Red-bellied Macaws.
  • Explore Brazilian drylands.
  • We shall stay here for the next two days.

Day 9

  • More exploration at Hyacinth Cliffs.

Day 10

  • Return to Hyacinth Valley in time to observe Hyacinth Macaws from the hide once again.

Day 11

  • Drive to see Howler Monkeys and Tufted-ear Marmosets at close range.
  • Drive to Barreiras and take the very comfortable bus to Salvador. One can really rest during this drive, which is 12 hour long. (We can also fly if you want to pay for it!)

Day 12

  • Fly to Santarem and check into hotel or simply get on boat.

Day 13

  • We begin this portion of the tour in the early morning, visiting the Meeting of the Waters (the confluence of the Amazon and Tapajos rivers).
  • Head for Maica River, where one can observe lots of water birds, Squirrel Monkeys, Silvery Marmosets (endemic sp.), Chestnut-fronted Macaws, Canary-winged Parakeets, Brazilian Tamadua, Porcupine, and lots of sloths. Anaconda spotting and some fishing can be easily done here.
  • Spend the night on the Tapajos River

Day 14

  • Early-morning hike at Jamaraqua Community, located in the Tapajos National Forest.

Day 15

  • Head down the Tapajos River to Alter do Chao, a well-known resort.
  • In the afternoon, take the boat to the mouth of the Jari River to observe a flock of over 30,000 White-eyed Parakeets plus other parrots like Festive and Short-tailed parrots (both endemic to the Amazon).
  • Do some cayman spotting

Day 16

  • Return to Santarem via Pajussara (a friend's place)

Day 17

  • Fly back to Fortaleza.
