Northeastern and Northern Brazil Trip

departure to observe Lear's Macaws.
- We
shall stay at camp, which is an old, clean house, only 40m from the
hide and 1 hour drive from the nesting site.
Day
3
- Early
departure to hide to observe and take trophy photographs of Lear's Macaws.
(They are extremely threatened, with only 200 left in the wild. They
are endemic to this ecosystem, called Caatinga.)
- There
will be at least 30 birds (max. 60) to be observed during several hours
in the morning and afternoon.
Day
4
- Early
departure to Lear's macaw nesting site, which is composed of beautiful,
amazing 70- to 100-meter-tall cliffs. Here we are also likely to observe
King Vultures.
Day
5
- Early
departure to Lencois
- Check
into hotel
Day
6
- Morning
hike along the mesas and waterfalls at Lencois area.
- Depart
to small village located only 45m from Hyacinth Cliffs.
Day
7
- Visit
hide to observe over 40 (max. 80) Hyacinth macaws. (Hide is only 15m
away.)
- Return
to Hyacinth camp, only 15-minute walk from hide.
- Repeat
in afternoon.
Day
8
- Early
departure to Hyacinth Cliffs to observe flocks of over 20 Red and Green
Macaws, Maned Wolves and Red-bellied Macaws.
- Explore
Brazilian drylands.
- We
shall stay here for the next two days.

9
- More
exploration at Hyacinth Cliffs.
Day
10
- Return
to Hyacinth Valley in time to observe Hyacinth Macaws from the hide
once again.

11
- Drive
to see Howler Monkeys and Tufted-ear Marmosets at close range.
- Drive
to Barreiras and take the very comfortable bus to Salvador. One can
really rest during this drive, which is 12 hour long. (We can also fly
if you want to pay for it!)

- Fly
to Santarem and check into hotel or simply get on boat.
Day
13
- We
begin this portion of the tour in the early morning, visiting the Meeting
of the Waters (the confluence of the Amazon and Tapajos rivers).
- Head
for Maica River, where one can observe lots of water birds, Squirrel
Monkeys, Silvery Marmosets (endemic sp.), Chestnut-fronted Macaws, Canary-winged
Parakeets, Brazilian Tamadua, Porcupine, and lots of sloths. Anaconda
spotting and some fishing can be easily done here.
- Spend
the night on the Tapajos River

14
- Early-morning
hike at Jamaraqua Community, located in the Tapajos National Forest.
Day
15
- Head
down the Tapajos River to Alter do Chao, a well-known resort.
- In
the afternoon, take the boat to the mouth of the Jari River to observe
a flock of over 30,000 White-eyed Parakeets plus other parrots like
Festive and Short-tailed parrots (both endemic to the Amazon).
- Do
some cayman spotting

to Santarem via Pajussara (a friend's place)
